Au sujet de la prononciation et les accents
It may be helpful to know that your accent is a part of your personality, and you might want to think twice before attempting to eliminate all traces of your native tongue. That may sound counterintuitive, but the fact is that English is a composition of many languages, and phonetic differences are allowed for, and even encouraged, especially in the USA.
That said, you can learn to speak English correctly, and with with a more region-neutral accent! I was born and raised in the Midwest, and I speak and teach the standard Midwestern American accent.
It is vital to learn English from native English speaker, who knows the language and can teach you to speak it well. Nothing will betray your efforts more—or reduce your credibility faster— than the mispronunciation of a key sound, such as “th,” for example, when incorrectly pronounced as a “d” or a “v,” as taught by many non-native English speakers.
The American Midwest Accent is the accent you hear spoken by television and radio newscasters, such as on CNN. Indeed, up-and-coming broadcasters are coached in this accent, as it is widely recognized as the most neutral of American English accents.
There are a few helpful tools I use to help you gain mastery of this standard accent. Using a version of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), you will learn and practice basic phonetic sounds. This is a series of symbols, such as the ones you see in a dictionary, which represent the intended sound of each letter, syllable and word.
Why phonetics? It is critical to learn how letters are meant to sound, alone and in combination, and to practice them at their purest state. This is how we learn all language, and the techniques and results are time-tested and proven.
I will send you the IPA I have adapted for our use after our first lesson together. Then, your lesson reports will include a list of words we encountered during our lesson, each spelled correctly and followed by the phonetic spelling [I include British pronunciations if there is a marked difference]. Use the IPA as a guide to help you practice pronunciation on your own.
With DC you will learn phonetic sound combinations and variations in an encouraging and lively conversational setting, always focusing on the positive!
